Rural Garden
We were lucky enough to develop a large, secluded garden in the beautiful English countryside.
There were a few problems that we needed to address; the house had French doors which opened straight out onto lawn with no hard standing for seating or dining. The garden sloped steeply down from the house and had steps down to the lower lawn cut directly into the lawn bank which felt unfinished. Our solution was to design a practical terrace including a relaxed seating area as well as a dining area outside the house.
We did not want this rural garden to look over built so we incorporated as much planting as possible both in cut-outs on the terrace and in generous raised beds either side of the steps to soften the hard landscaping. We chose limestone paving and traditional walling and cobbles to ensure that the garden would blend with the house and not date. We also made sure to reuse all the paving that was already in the garden which helped to add an established feel to the space.
As well as the area immediately outside the house, we needed to give the family a reason to venture further into the bottom section of the garden which was unused. To address this we created a lovely circular seating area nestled into the bank with a fire pit for enjoying the evening sun.
We also included subtle lighting in the scheme, again being sensitive to the rural setting we ensured that this was practical and understated.
